Attention and distraction

Why can’t I stay on one thing with everything pulling at me?

You sit down to do one thing and the room fills with louder things. Attention does not stay where you put it.

The pattern

Notifications, worries, other people, the next thing on the list: each one is more interesting than what you meant to do. You decide to focus and a few minutes later you are somewhere else, without having chosen to go.

When this shows up

  • You open your phone to check one thing and close it twenty minutes later.
  • You reread the same paragraph three times.
  • A conversation is happening and you are rehearsing your reply instead of listening.

What it feels like

Scattered and a little ashamed of it. It feels like a character flaw, when it is mostly that nothing is holding your attention in place.

The sutta lens

The Finest Lady in the Land (SN 47.20)

Read source

The Buddha asks the mendicants to picture a crowd gathering to watch the finest lady in the land, and a bigger crowd still once she starts to dance and sing. A man who wants to live is handed a bowl filled to the brim with oil and told to carry it between the crowd and the dancer, with a man holding a drawn sword walking right behind him: spill one drop and he loses his head. Would that man let his attention wander to the show? The mendicants say he would not. Then the Buddha explains his own image. The brim-full bowl of oil stands for mindfulness of the body, and he tells them to train in it until it is their vehicle and their basis.

Try this today

  1. 1Pick one ordinary task and carry it like the bowl: one thing, start to finish.
  2. 2When attention slips, come back to the body first: the feet, the hands, the breath.
  3. 3Notice what pulled you away, without following it.

Everything pulls my attention away and I can’t stay on one thing. What does SN 47.20, the bowl of oil, say about that?
