Craving and avoidance
Craving the reset button
The pull toward food, scrolling, shopping, sex, or fantasy when the present moment feels insufficient.
The pattern
The day becomes slightly uncomfortable, and the mind reaches for a pleasant object that will change the channel.
When this shows up
- You open an app before knowing why.
- A small discomfort turns into a search for a treat.
- The promise is not pleasure exactly; it is escape from this texture of now.
What it feels like
Colored from the inside. The wanted object starts looking more necessary, more harmless, and more available than it really is.
The sutta lens
Sangarava Sutta (SN 46.55)
SN 46.55 compares sensual desire to water mixed with dye. The mind is not merely seeing an object; the wanting has tinted the whole scene. Seeing the tint is already a weakening of the spell.
Try this today
- 1Pause before the object and ask, "What feeling am I trying not to feel?"
- 2Notice what the wanting does to time: urgent, short, compressed.
- 3Try one minute of staying with the unedited sensation before deciding.

I keep reaching for quick pleasure when I feel uncomfortable. How does the Buddha describe sensual desire as a hindrance?
